Everything Starts Someway and this is how Astride’s Lil Mama’s Kittie Retreat got started and the story of how it got started will be done by Lil Mama herself, because if it were not for her we would not be here today...
Hi Folks, my name is Lil Mama. Mr Tom and I helped Astride start Astride’s Lil Mama’s Kittie Retreat. Yes, we started it all in her back yard with our first litter. Astride saw that we didn’t have any food and the kittens needed more nutrition than I could provide. So, kitten food and kitten milk came every day. Our family grew up. But, we were hooked on our freedom and didn’t get too close to Astride. It made it very difficult for Astride to help us.
As life has it, one day Mr Tom passed away. He was a great Orange guy that took very good care of me and my kittens. I loved his gentle manner but it did not serve him well. As you might know, Orange cats are lovers and not fighters. My girls and I would clean his wounds and nurse him back to health. But, that last fight just did him in.

I then had a brief friendship with a big white cat named Sarge. He, always stood guard at the garage door, in the evening, and made sure we all got in for the night. Unfortunately, Sarge got sick and never came back. So, I ended up in the house close to having my next litter. Even thou I love Astride very much, she sure can be very dense sometimes. For instance, I was ready to have my litter and I called her. Do you know, it took her a whole half hour before she showed up in the basement to stay with me thru the night while I delivered my next litter. I gave her a dirty look to let her know I wasn’t very happy with her. And, she wasn’t very useful, either. Astride fell asleep on the futon and only woke up in the morning to congratulate me on my litter. See what I mean-dense. Despite, everything, I had 5 beautiful white kittens that found wonderful homes.

Ever since, I’ve had a great life with Astride and I love it here. Our retreat has grown by several fold. We now have a large family. And with a large family come life’s challenges. Some of our family members have severe health issues
.
Let me tell you a bit about Penelope. Astride found Penelope as a little kitten with an injured paw. Somewhere Penelope had got her leg caught and her skin was pulled back with the tendons showing. If that wasn’t enough, Penelope had fleas and a severe eye infection. All got taken care of before Penelope came in to live with us. However, 5 years later, Penelope has kidney failure and goes every week for treatments. Penelope is doing great and enjoying life. She loves high places and jumps from the top of the bookcase to wardrobe to dresser. We’ve become real buds sharing the same room. Penelope’s all gray with a pretty round face. Astride calls her- Precious Precocious Pretty Princess Penelope.

I just have to tell you about the unique way that Bow and Peep joined us. Astride used to have a way about her that before going to bed she would go outside to enjoy the fresh air. One warm evening, she sees a mama cat with a kitten. The kitten starts walking in a straight line towards Astride and stops right in front of her and starts peeping. Astride picks it up and sees that it’s eyes are glued shut from puss, so it can’t see. The mama cat is looking at Astride to see what she will do. For once, she actually understood what happened and what was expected of her. Astride picked up “Peep” and told mama, I’ll take care of her. From the look in the mama’s eyes she know she had done the right thing sending Peep to Astride. Once inside, Astride cleaned Peep’s eyes and started feeding it by hand water and wet food-medical treatment followed. Peep is a gorgeous “Bengal” looking cat. The mama cat wasn’t finished with Astride. The next night she sent “Bow” to Astride in the same manner. Bow wasn’t as sick as Peep, but joined his sister Peep inside. I’m glad the 2 are part of our family. However, the mama cat was never seen again. Truly, a Mother’s love.

Well, there you have it folks. These 3 stories are only a few of our great family. As large as our family has grown, so have the medical issues. We now have another cat, Zippy, that has kidney treatments. And, Zippy is definitely living up to her name by zipping around the house. We have never seen her this alive. She is loving every minute of life.
We made it through a horrendous flea infestation a couple of years ago when we lost a couple of the family. Not too long ago we lost, Holly, to liver failure, and now we have other health issues cropping up. Tiny just had all of her teeth removed and is recuperating at the hospital. Millie is staying there with an unknown digestive tract infection. For some reason, we have been sent cats with horrible health issues. And, Astride, will do whatever she can to make sure they are all taken care of.
All of this has taken a toll on my Astride, who we depend on taking care of us. We sure could use some help. With Astride’s limited income, it makes it tough to take care of us. And, those of us that could get adopted, can’t, until our health issues are taken care of. And, then there is Penelope and Zippy that need long term care and will stay with us for the rest of their lives.
